Sydney is home to some of the most iconic beaches in the world — and after living here for over 20 years, I’ve experienced the very best of them. From famous stretches like Bondi to quieter local favourites, Sydney’s coastline offers something for everyone, whether you’re looking to swim, surf, relax, or simply take in the views. In this guide, I’ll share the best Sydney beaches you shouldn’t miss, along with coastal walks, local tips, and where to eat nearby — so you can experience them like a local.
This is a true insider’s guide to the best of Sydney’s beaches.
Water Safety on Sydney’s Beaches
As much as Sydney’s beaches are quite spectacular, they can also be quite dangerous. Always try and swim with a ‘buddy’ such as your friend or partner. Keep in between the flags where possible, as even the most strongest swimmers can get caught out in the strong currents.
It’s also worth thinking about how you move around Sydney’s marinas and jetties, as inexperienced sailors could quickly find themselves in trouble, especially on Sydney’s most popular beaches. Booking planned tours can be a great way to see these beaches in comfort and safety.

A Guide to the Best Sydney Beaches
Bondi
Ah yes, the ever famous Bondi beach. There are many things that make Bondi beach great but also some things that don’t. It is however in the list for the best Sydney beaches as it is quite a beautiful and very famous beach. Any visit to Sydney should definitely include a day out at Bondi beach. Don’t be mistaken that Bondi is only good for the summertime. Bondi beach is actually an excellent place to visit in winter just as much as summer and there are obviously much less people around during the colder seasons.
For swimming, it’s highly recommended to stay between the flags as there can be strong currents/rips not to mention the surfers in the water. There is also 2 pools, one in North Bondi and on the south end, the famous Bondi Icebergs. The cliffs on either side are incredibly picturesque and sometimes you can even spot dolphins from there. It is also one of Sydney’s most incredible coastal walks (Coogee to Bondi) and should not be missed. Bondi is one of the places listed in the 7 Day Sydney Itinerary which is worth a read if you’re visiting Sydney especially for the first time.
Where to eat:
- Beach Rd Hotel– a classic Aussie pub with great food and a beautiful beer garden
- Icebergs Dining Room and Bar– Perched above the famous Icebergs Pool, this stylish restaurant offers panoramic ocean views and a contemporary menu that showcases the best of Australian cuisine. Enjoy a memorable meal or a signature cocktail while taking in the breathtaking Bondi Beach scenery.
- Bondi Trattoria– This classic Italian trattoria combines local produce with traditional Italian recipes to create delicious pasta dishes, wood-fired pizzas, and mouthwatering desserts. With a warm and welcoming atmosphere, Bondi Trattoria is perfect for a romantic dinner or a family meal.
Narrabeen
Narrabeen is my most favourite beach in Sydney and in my personal opinion is the best beach in Sydney! There’s plenty of things to do in Narrabeen whether its summer or winter and the views are beautiful all year round. The beach is patrolled throughout the summer months and at some times during the winter and there are plenty of fun activities to do here such as boogie boarding, surfing and fishing.
Located on the northern end of Narrabeen Beach, close to a small carpark, café and Narrabeen Lagoon, the beach pool is a beautiful swimming spot. You will also find change rooms and toilets near the pool and outdoor showers.
The Narrabeen Lakeside or Lagoon was one of my favourite spots to ride my bicycle and is a very picturesque trail around the entire lake.
I also highly recommend a visit to The Beaches Market at Warriewood (approximately 10 minute walk from North Narrabeen Beach). There’s something for everyone – from fresh produce and crafts to clothes and homewares. The Market is open every Friday from 8am to 12.30pm.
Where to eat:
- Nourished Cafe and Lounge- Located across the road from Narrabeen lagoon, the café offers indoor and outdoor dining. For breakfast enjoy buttermilk pancakes, Paleo Power Bread or an omelette. Lunch menu includes dishes such as Smoked trout bruchetta, fish and chips, Nachos …and more.
- Oceans Narrabeen– Located across the road from North Narrabeen Surf Club, Oceans is a popular spot and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- Mexicano- Located right next to Oceans and serve the tastiest Margaritas! Highly recommend.
- Park House Mona Vale- Only a very short 10 min drive up the road from Narrabeen is this gorgeous pub with great food and stunning beer garden. Also highly recommend.

Coogee
A lot of people ask, is Coogee or Bondi beach better to visit? My answer is both! There’s no way I would recommend one over the other. Both of these Sydney beaches are beautiful, popular and well worth the visit. Actually you could even visit both in one day and a few other Sydney beaches like Bronte, Tamarama and Clovelly in between by doing the famous Bondi to Coogee coastal walk.
Coogee also homes a women and children only beach, the McIvers Baths which has been around for over a century!
Where to eat:
- Coogee Pavilion- rooftop bar with ocean views. Need I say more?
- Coogee Bay Hotel- For 150 years, Coogee Bay Hotel has hugged the stunning coastline of Coogee Beach. This hotel has amazing pub food and you can even choose to stay here.
- Churrasco– a family-owned restaurant established in 2006 and nestled in the heart of Coogee, is renowned for its All-You-Can-Eat Brazilian Style BBQ. It’s delicious and fun!

Maroubra
I have added Maroubra to the list of the best Sydney beaches as it is actually quite a stunning inner city beach and is much more quieter than Coogee or Bondi. It’s almost a kilometre long, making it the longest beach in the eastern suburbs – which is probably why it never feels crowded! Maroubra also has one of the best ocean baths in Sydney, Mahon Pool which is well worth checking out. I have also included Maroubra in my post on Sydney’s Best Bars & Restaurants.
Where to eat:
Maranello’s- Hands down the best Italian restaurant in Sydney! There isn’t any pasta dish they serve that isn’t absolutely mouth watering and delicious.
The Bay Hotel & Diner- classic Aussie pub with good food and good views
