Known as the Astronomy Capital of Australia, this small town in regional New South Wales is famous for its dark skies, the impressive Siding Spring Observatory and its close proximity to Warrumbungle National Park.

I originally visited Coonabarabran for the stargazing, but what surprised me most was just how much there is to do beyond looking up at the stars. From scenic drives and country bakeries to unique attractions and unforgettable accommodation, this underrated NSW destination has far more to offer than many people realise.

Is Coonabarabran Worth Visiting?

Yes — Coonabarabran is absolutely worth visiting.

While many travellers simply pass through on their way to somewhere else, those who stay a little longer are rewarded with some of Australia’s darkest skies, stunning landscapes and experiences you won’t find anywhere else.

From visiting Siding Spring Observatory and exploring the Warrumbungles to photographing the Milky Way and staying in unique accommodation, Coonabarabran turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of my NSW road trip.

Whether you’re a keen stargazer or simply looking for a unique country escape, Coonabarabran is well worth adding to your itinerary.

Whether you’re visiting for the dark skies, the Warrumbungles or as part of a longer NSW road trip, these are the best things to do in Coonabarabran.

How to Get to Coonabarabran

Coonabarabran is located in regional New South Wales, making it a great stop on a NSW road trip. Because the town is quite remote, the easiest way to visit is by car.

Most travellers reach Coonabarabran by driving from Sydney, Brisbane, Dubbo, Tamworth or Moree.

Approximate drive times:

👉 Sydney to Coonabarabran: around 6–7 hours
👉 Brisbane to Coonabarabran: around 7–8 hours
👉 Dubbo to Coonabarabran: around 2 hours
👉 Moree to Coonabarabran: around 2.5–3 hours
👉 Tamworth to Coonabarabran: around 2.5 hours

If you’re flying from interstate or don’t want to drive the whole way, the easiest option is to fly into a nearby regional centre such as Dubbo or Tamworth and hire a car from there.

You can compare flights to Dubbo or Tamworth here before planning the rest of your Coonabarabran road trip.

Do You Need a Car in Coonabarabran?

Yes — I’d strongly recommend having a car in Coonabarabran.

While the town centre itself is small, many of the best things to do in Coonabarabran are spread out across the region. Attractions like Siding Spring Observatory, Warrumbungle National Park, Bubble Hotel Coonabarabran, the World’s Largest Virtual Solar System Drive, Pilliga Pottery and the Pilliga Sandstone Caves are all much easier to visit with your own vehicle.

Having a car gives you the flexibility to:

👉 Visit Siding Spring Observatory
👉 Stop along the Solar System Drive
👉 Explore Warrumbungle National Park
👉 Stay outside town
👉 Visit nearby day trip spots
👉 Time scenic drives around sunrise or sunset

Because this is a regional road trip destination, I’d also recommend downloading offline maps, filling up with fuel when you can and avoiding driving at dusk or dawn where possible due to wildlife.

If you don’t have your own car, you can compare rental cars for your Coonabarabran road trip before you go.

1. Visit Siding Spring Observatory

A visit to Siding Spring Observatory is easily one of the best things to do in Coonabarabran, especially if you’re interested in stargazing, astronomy or the dark sky history of the region.

Located inside Warrumbungle National Park, Siding Spring Observatory is home to the Anglo-Australian Telescope, the largest optical telescope in Australia. The observatory sits high above the surrounding landscape, so even before you get into the astronomy side of things, the views over the Warrumbungles are incredible.

I joined The Giant of the Sky Tour with Beyond the Sky Stargazing, which I’d definitely recommend.

The tour included:

👉 A 1.5 hour guided tour of the Anglo-Australian Telescope
👉 Access to the Sky Deck, around 50 metres above the ground
👉 Panoramic views across Warrumbungle National Park

My favourite part was heading out onto the Sky Deck. From up there, you get sweeping views across Warrumbungle National Park, including the Breadknife and the rugged volcanic landscape that makes this part of NSW so unique.

Before or after your tour, it’s also worth spending time in the Siding Spring Exploratory, the observatory’s hands-on astronomy visitor centre. It features interactive displays, a café and access to a free viewing gallery inside the massive Anglo-Australian Telescope.

I found the Exploratory really interesting because it helped give more context to what we were seeing inside the observatory. Even if you don’t join a guided tour, it’s still worth visiting for the displays, viewing gallery and the chance to learn more about why Coonabarabran is such an important location for astronomy in Australia.

Tip: Book a guided tour if you can. The Exploratory is interesting on its own, but the tour gives much more context, and the Sky Deck views alone are worth it.

2. Drive the World’s Largest Virtual Solar System Drive

One of the most unique things to do in Coonabarabran is the World’s Largest Virtual Solar System Drive, a free self-guided drive that turns the roads around town into a giant scale model of the solar system.

There are five routes that lead towards Siding Spring Observatory, where you’ll find “the Sun.” Along the way, planet signs are placed at scaled distances to show just how far apart everything is in space. The model is scaled down to 38 million times smaller than the real solar system, which makes the drive both fun and surprisingly educational.

You can do the full drive, or simply stop at a few of the planet signs on your way to the observatory. I loved that it made the drive out to Siding Spring feel like part of the experience rather than just transport from town.

The final stop is the Sun at Siding Spring Observatory, making it a perfect activity to pair with a visit to the observatory or The Giant of the Sky Tour.

Tip: Allow extra time for safe roadside stops, especially if you want photos of the planet signs along the way.

3. Explore Warrumbungle National Park

One of the best things to do in Coonabarabran is explore Warrumbungle National Park, a dramatic landscape of volcanic peaks, rugged walking trails and sweeping lookouts.

Located just a short drive from town, the park is one of the most iconic natural attractions in the region and a major reason travellers visit Coonabarabran. It’s known for its unique rock formations, scenic drives, wildlife and the famous Breadknife and Grand High Tops Walk.

Even from the surrounding areas, the Warrumbungles are seriously impressive. The jagged peaks and volcanic landscape make the park one of the most memorable places to visit near Coonabarabran.

Tip: If you want to do the Breadknife and Grand High Tops Walk, allow most of the day and check current track conditions before visiting.

4. Experience Australia’s First Dark Sky Park and Photograph the Milky Way

One of the most unforgettable things to do in Coonabarabran is experience the night sky. The region is home to Australia’s first Dark Sky Park, making it one of the best places in NSW for stargazing and Milky Way photography.

With low light pollution, wide open skies and the dramatic Warrumbungle landscape nearby, it’s easy to see why Coonabarabran is known as the Astronomy Capital of Australia.

If you’re visiting for astrophotography, try to plan your trip around the new moon when the sky is darkest. Autumn and winter are usually the best seasons for seeing the Milky Way clearly in this part of Australia.

For the best chance of clear night skies:

👉 Visit around the new moon
👉 Avoid bright moonlight
👉 Check cloud cover before heading out
👉 Bring a tripod for Milky Way photography
👉 Give your eyes time to adjust to the dark

Even if you’re not into photography, the stargazing alone is worth the trip. Standing beneath a sky this dark makes you realise how many stars are usually hidden by city lights.

Tip: If stargazing is a priority, check the moon phase before booking your trip.

5. Stay at Bubble Hotel Coonabarabran

For a unique place to stay in Coonabarabran, Bubble Hotel Coonabarabran is hard to beat.

Located on a private property with sweeping views of the Warrumbungles, this adults-only bubble dome is designed for stargazing, slow mornings and switching off. It’s one of the most memorable stays near Coonabarabran and a perfect option if you want to experience the region’s dark skies without leaving your accommodation.

The bubble has a clear roof above the bed, so you can lie back and watch the stars from inside. During my stay, this was easily one of the highlights, especially after spending the day exploring Siding Spring Observatory and the surrounding Warrumbungle region.

It’s the kind of accommodation that feels like part of the destination, not just somewhere to sleep. I’ve written more about the full experience in my guide to the best stargazing accommodation in NSW, including what makes this stay so special for dark sky lovers.

6. Join a Stargazing Tour

Joining a stargazing tour in Coonabarabran is one of the best ways to experience the region’s famous dark skies, especially if you want someone to point out constellations, planets, star clusters and galaxies.

As the Astronomy Capital of Australia, Coonabarabran has several astronomy-focused experiences, with tours taking advantage of the clear skies around Warrumbungle National Park and Siding Spring Observatory.

Popular stargazing experiences around Coonabarabran include:

👉 Coonabarabran Stargazing — night sky shows at Getaway Tourist Park
👉 Donna the Astronomer at Milroy Observatory — guided telescope viewing

A guided tour is especially useful if you’re new to astronomy because you’re not just looking up at the sky — you’re learning what you’re seeing. Depending on the tour, you may get to view planets, star clusters, galaxies and nebulae through telescopes.

Tip: Stargazing tours are weather-dependent, so check conditions before booking and try to plan your visit around the new moon for the darkest skies.

7. Enjoy a Classic Country Pub Feed at the Royal Hotel

After a day exploring the observatory, Warrumbungles or dark skies, the Royal Hotel Coonabarabran is a great spot for a relaxed country pub meal.

It’s casual, easy and exactly the kind of place you want after a big day on the road.

Good for: pub classics, drinks, dinner in town and an easy meal after sightseeing.

8. Grab a Treat from Coonabarabran Bakery

A stop at Coonabarabran Bakery is a simple but worthwhile addition to your Coonabarabran itinerary, especially if you love a classic country bakery.

Grab a pie, sausage roll, sweet treat or coffee before heading out to Siding Spring Observatory or Warrumbungle National Park.

Tip: Go earlier in the day for the best selection.

9. Discover Crystals and Fossils at Crystal Kingdom

For something different, visit Crystal Kingdom, a small local attraction featuring crystals, fossils, gemstones and minerals from the Warrumbungle region.

It’s one of the more unique things to do in Coonabarabran if you want to learn more about the volcanic history of the area or pick up a souvenir.

Good for: families, geology lovers, souvenirs and a short indoor activity.

10. Explore Coonabarabran Town Centre

Leave a little time to wander through Coonabarabran town centre, especially around John Street where you’ll find cafés, shops, pubs and local services.

It doesn’t need hours, but it’s worth a quick stroll to get a feel for the town beyond the main attractions.

Tip: Stop by the visitor information centre if you want local maps, road updates or current advice on things to do in Coonabarabran.

11. Visit Pilliga Pottery

If you’re looking for a relaxed stop near Coonabarabran, Pilliga Pottery is a popular place to visit outside town.

Located at Barkala Farm, it’s known for handmade pottery, local clay pieces, a creative farmstay setting and the Blue Wren Bush Café. It’s a nice slower-paced stop if you want to add something a little different to your Coonabarabran itinerary.

Good for: pottery, local art, families, coffee/lunch and a relaxed country stop.

Tip: Check opening hours before driving out, especially if you’re visiting outside school holidays or want to eat at the café.

12. Take a Day Trip to the Pilliga Sandstone Caves

Another unique place to visit near Coonabarabran is the Pilliga Sandstone Caves, located in Pilliga Nature Reserve.

The Sandstone Caves walking track is a short 1.7 km loop that takes around 1–1.5 hours and passes through sandstone formations with ancient Aboriginal rock art. It’s one of the more meaningful day trips from Coonabarabran, especially if you’re interested in nature, culture and the history of the Pilliga Forest.

Good for: short walks, sandstone formations, Aboriginal heritage and a half-day trip from Coonabarabran.

Tip: Check current directions and conditions before visiting. NSW National Parks notes that directions can be obtained through the Pilliga Forest Discovery Centre, as the walk is not signposted at the request of Aboriginal Elders.

13. Extend Your Road Trip to Dubbo and Stay at Zoofari Lodge

If you’re turning your Coonabarabran trip into a longer regional NSW road trip, consider extending your itinerary to Dubbo.

Dubbo is around 145–160 km from Coonabarabran, with the drive usually taking just under 2 hours, making it an easy add-on before or after your time in the Warrumbungle region.

Zoofari Lodge, Dubbo

Zoofari Lodge is located inside Taronga Western Plains Zoo Dubbo and offers a safari-style overnight stay with lodge accommodation, zoo entry, dinner, breakfast, exclusive tours and bike hire included.

Good for: families, couples, animal lovers and anyone wanting to turn their Coonabarabran getaway into a bigger NSW road trip.

Tip: If you’re planning both Coonabarabran and Dubbo, I’d allow at least 4–5 days total so you’re not rushing the observatory, Warrumbungles, stargazing and the zoo.

14. Attend StarFest

If your trip lines up with the October long weekend, StarFest is one of the best seasonal things to do in Coonabarabran.

Hosted by Siding Spring Observatory, StarFest is an annual astronomy festival held on the Friday and Saturday of the NSW Labor Day long weekend. It usually includes science talks, observatory events and open day activities, making it a great time to visit if you want to experience Coonabarabran’s astronomy scene beyond the usual tours and stargazing experiences.

Good for: astronomy lovers, families, science talks, observatory events and a unique reason to visit Coonabarabran in October.

To finish your trip, take the Coonabarabran–Warrumbungle–Tooraweenah Drive, a scenic route that combines mountain views, lookouts and easy stops around the Warrumbungle region.

The full drive is around 70 km and makes a great half-day trip if you want to see more of the landscape without committing to a long hike.
