One of the common questions we get asked is what’s in our camera bag? It makes sense, whenever we travel we always have our camera gear backpack with us as we never want to miss a chance of capturing a moment worth remembering. With practice comes experience and although we started with a lot of budget gear in the beginning, over time we have collected what we believe to be the best travel photography gear.

Take a look and see what’s inside our camera bag!

Camera’s

Sony A7iii (Mirrorless 24.2 Megapixels)

We bought the Sony A7iii (Mirrorless 24.2 Megapixels) with the intention of capturing both photo’s and video on our travels. This camera is an absolute work horse in both formats and is a highly recommended camera among many professional bloggers, vloggers and photographers. It is light, weather sealed, has intelligent auto features for those looking for the quality but not interested in the technical stuff but also offers total manual control if your looking to start adding more of your own creative style.

I will keep this camera for as long as it survives. I must admit as my photography has ventured a bit more into the landscape field, I am looking at buying a higher megapixel version such as the Sony A7R IV (61 Megapixels) for its cropping ability.

Sony’s camera & sensor technology is often ahead of its competitors these days — in fact, even Nikon uses Sony sensors in their cameras!

We also sometimes use our Sony RX100 which was our first camera we started with before we progressed into the more advanced camera. The Sony RX100 is a great beginner camera, the quality of the images are great and is a much more budget friendly option too!

Camera Lenses

Sony Zeiss 16-35mm F4 — Wide Angle Lens

The Sony Zeiss 16-35mm F4 is MY favourite lens of all! We use this around 80% of the time. This lens is perfect for capturing as much as possible inside a big landscape. You can also get really decent portraits out of it zoomed in as well.
There is a more expensive version which we are looking to invest in next which is the Sony 16-35mm F2.8 and if we could go back we would have started with this one not the F4 (Just because of its low light capabilities, plus its a little sharper).

Sony 24-70mm F2.8 – Medium Zoom Lens

The Sony 24-70mm F2.8 is great for giving a little more reach than the wide angle lens. It’s also handy when we don’t have a lot of space and don’t want to carry a heavy bag (like going on a long hike) which gives us the best of both worlds. Not quite as wide as the 16-35mm but usually wide enough for most landscapes with the added ability to zoom in to smaller subjects that are further away.

Sony G-Master 70-200mm F2.8 — Telephoto Zoom Lens

The Sony G-Master 70-200mm F2.8 is the perfect wildlife photography lens. It has the ability to zoom in to small subjects that are far away- like when you’re at the Zoo or on a Safari. Because of the telephoto optics it makes for very interesting shots with background compression making mountains or a landscape look bigger or closer than it really is.

Sony 50mm F1.8 — Prime Lens

The Sony 50mm F1.8 prime lens has a fixed focal length but a much wider aperture, allowing more light in. This is perfect for shooting in low light conditions as well as getting a very blurry background.

Action/Waterproof Camera

GoPro HERO8 Black

We’ve been using GoPros way before we started this travel blog. They are so small and virtually fit into any bag. The GoPro HERO8 Black is an excellent action camera — they are waterproof, shockproof and can be basically mounted anywhere. The Hero 8 now comes with Hypersmooth 2.0 which gives your video footage the ultimate stabilisation- meaning there is no more ‘shake’.

Drone

DJI Mavic Pro 2

The perfect tool for capturing aerial photography and video, while costing much less than renting a helicopter! Drones have really come a long way.
We couldn’t be happier with our DJI Mavic Pro 2. It flies super fast, is extremely reliable, and shoots some very high-quality photos and video. Not to mention it folds up nice and compact to fit in our backpack!
It has omni directional obstacle sensors to help stop you from running into things while flying, so you can concentrate on the shot.

Camera Gear Backpack

Incase DSLR Pro Pack 15″ Backpack – Black

The Incase DSLR Pro Pack 15″ Backpack – Black holds our entire camera gear collection, sits comfortably on our back, and has the perfect amount of weatherproofing and gear straps to tackle any typical outdoor adventures. Pete also uses this backpack as his carry-on for flights.
You can also strap on a tripod and there’s a dedicated laptop pocket, room for a jacket, water and snacks, plus it opens from the back for easy access on the ground.

Laptop

Apple MacBook Pro

I love my Apple MacBook Pro. It is one of the finest pieces of technology that I own! It allows me to work from anywhere in the world. They are reliable and easy to travel around with. I use my MacBook Pro for all our editing software such as Lightroom, Photoshop and Luminar 4. The MacBook Pro has a faster processing speed which makes it more efficient when using intensive image and/or video editing software. Make sure you also get yourself a Type-C Multi-Port Adapter so you can plug in your USB’s, external hard drive and SD cards all at the same time! And throw in some new APPLE AIRPODS PRO so you can listen to music on your laptop via bluetooth!

Important Accessories

With all the camera gear inside our bag there are some really important accessories we love to use as well:

  • Samsung T5 1TB External Hard Drive– give us a bunch more storage space rather than cramming everything onto our laptops and slowing them down. Hard drives are essential for organising all of our footage and it speeds up work flow as we know where everything is stored.
  • Ultra High Capacity Power Bank– charges all of our batteries on the go and lasts around 10 full charges before the power bank needs a charge itself!
  • Universal Travel Adapter– Because obviously when you travel internationally you need to be able to plug in!
  • Sandisk SD Cards– Essential for travelling especially when taking heaps of photos. Our main one is 64GB and the spare is 32GB incase we ever need extra. 64GB is plenty and it should last a few days of shooting.
  • Polar Pro 6-Pack Cinema Series Filters for Mavic 2 Pro– designed to reduce camera shutter speed so that you can create smooth cinematic aerial videos.
  • NiSi Filters 100mm ND Long Exposure Kit– Neutral density (ND) filters uniformly reduce the amount of light entering the lens. The ND Filter can enable greater motion blurring and image detail by allowing a large aperture and a slow shutter speed. ND filters are also helpful when the contrast between the highlights and shadows is too high to get a quality exposure
  • Godox V1S TTL Flash for Sony– a wireless flash that can be used on or off the camera. Perfect for portrait, wedding, event, travel photography, still life photography, etc.
  • Aputure MC Led Video Light– With 360° of hue and 100 levels of saturation adjustment, you have the power to conveniently reproduce any colour, all in the palm of your hand.

Software

  • Lightroom & Photoshop- Lightroom is super easy to use and has a mobile app as well for convenience of editing your photos on the go. I use Photoshop for all my banners, Pinterest Pins and Newsletters. I am not a computer whiz but I find these apps are really user friendly.
  • Skylum Luminar 4- I use this app more than I use Lightroom now. It has an amazing sky replacement feature which is great to use on photos with grey/dull skies.
