If you want to visit Scotland, but would rather take the work out of planning your trip, consider using my 2 Day Scotland Itinerary. It takes the stress out of planning and takes you through the best of Edinburgh and the beautiful highlands of Scotland.
Scotland is an incredible country with a deep, rich history and culture. You’ll be able to see hundreds of historic sites, abbeys, castles, sheep, highland cows, and incredible stunning scenery.
Our road trip started in London and took us all the way to Scotland. We used Air BnB through our entire road trip of the UK and Europe and so in Scotland we stayed in a cute little village town not far outside of Edinburgh. We decided over the few days we were spending in Scotland that we wanted to see Edinburgh and also do a scenic drive through the Scottish Highlands to Inverness- home of the Loch Ness monster!
First let’s make sure you have everything you need for your trip away-
Tips for your 2 Day Scotland Itinerary
GETTING AROUND SCOTLAND
Scotland covers a large area and unfortunately it isn’t always well connected by public transport. Many of the places we’ve included can only be reached by car. When taking a road trip, we use Rentalcars to compare price across different hire car companies.
We’ve also thoroughly researched every single tour that might help you get around. While you’re in the city itself, this bus route can help you easily get to the main attractions.
WHERE TO STAY IN SCOTLAND
For places that can’t be reached in a day trip from Sydney, we’ve included recommendations for the best accommodation in the area. In general, we’ve found the biggest range of accommodation options on Trip.com, especially in the more remote areas.
MOBILE DATA IN SCOTLAND
We use Airalo eSIMs on all of our trips because they can be set up easily. With Airalo’s eSIMs, we can access the Internet from virtually any country on the planet and don’t have to pay excessive roaming charges.
If you are looking for a data plan in Scotland, you can get a discount using

What to pack for your 2 day Scotland Itinerary
The weather in Scotland can be…unpredictable, at best. The skies can change on a dime and surprise you for better or worse. Chances are, no matter what time of year you go to Scotland that you will have rain and it will be chilly during some part of your trip. Having layers and waterproof gear is essential.
What to wear in Scotland:
- Rain Coat
- Wool Socks
- Layers
- Waterproof Shoes
- Blanket Scarf
- Knit Hat/Beanie
Driving in Scotland
If you want to really see Scotland, you’ll have to rent a car. If you’re coming from the US or mainland Europe, driving on the left can seem scary, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are a few tips:
- Think Left, Left, Left:
Repeat the word “left” in your mind or out loud several times before you drive and while you’re starting out. Close your eyes and visualize yourself on the left. These seem kind of silly, but they will really help as you prepare to completely flip your usual driving autopilot brain backwards! - When in doubt, follow the car in front of you.
- Roundabouts: Scotland and Europe, in general, is full of roundabouts. They are fantastic things that really help with the flow of traffic. In Scotland, they will curve to the left. Most of the time they consist of several lanes. be sure to follow the arrows or signs for which lane you need to be in. There can be anywhere from 2-6 or more exits on a roundabout and they can get pretty tricky. Just pay attention and you will be fine.
- Narrow Roads: Scotland is full of narrow roads with stone walls on either side. It’s an effort, but be sure to stay in your lane and not grazing the side of the wall or hedges.
- One Track Roads: You may come across quite a few one track roads. This means that there will be one lane shared by two directions of traffic. You will see “passing places” along all the roads where you must pull over and wait for cars to pass if you see them. Always pull over to the left. Never cross the road to pull into a passing place located on the right.
- Watch for animals: There’s nothing more magical than being in a sheep traffic jam! Just be sure to give them the right of way and pay attention. Also, look out for deer!
- Insurance: With all of the narrow roads, stone walls, hedges, small parking spaces and new left driving orientation, I always recommend that you get the full insurance on a rental car.
2 Day Scotland Itinerary
There’s never enough time to explore Scotland and it could honestly take you a lifetime. I’ve configured this 2 day Scotland itinerary for you to be able to see the best of what there is to see.
Now that you’ve done all you can to prepare for driving in and packing for Scotland, it’s time to talk about where you’ll be heading! I’ve arranged these 2 days in Scotland to begin Edinburgh, where most flights will take you to in Scotland and end on a road trip through the Scottish Highlands.
Day One: Edinburgh
There is no better place to start your 2 day Scotland Itinerary than in Edinburgh! Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital and it is literally like as though you have stepped into Medieval times. Edinburgh will most likely be your starting point on your journey around Scotland. Edinburgh is a beautiful city full of rich history, vibrant culture, and delicious food! What I think I love most about Edinburgh is that old-world feel mixed with a quirky vibe that’s hard to describe.
Edinburgh Castle
This iconic castle on a hill dates from the 12th century and is home to some of Scotland’s most famous history. Be sure you head to the great hall where presentations can be seen throughout the day.
Elephant House Cafe
Visit the birthplace of magic, where J.K. Rowling wrote the first five books in the Harry Potter series. You can see where she gained inspiration for Hogwarts and the magical wizarding world when you check out the view outside the cafe window. Be sure to take a trip to the toilets to see the Harry Potter fan love all over the walls!
The Royal Mile
Running approximately one mile between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace are the streets and shops that make up Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, which consist of Castlehill, the Lawnmarket, the High Street, the Canongate and Abbey Strand. It’s full of adorable shops and beautiful views.
St. Giles Cathedral
This 900-year-old church which was once a Catholic church, is now the main place of worship for the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh. Wander around and take in the incredible architecture and stained glass. If you want to take pictures of the inside there is a 2 Euro fee.

Day 2: Road Trip to Inverness
Day 2 for your 2 day Scotland Itinerary consists of a very picturesque drive that is highly recommended for anyone travelling through Scotland. You will see beautiful rolling hills and valleys that look like they belong on a postcard. You might even come across the famous train bridge used in the Harry Potter movies!
Known as the capital of the highlands, Inverness is an ancient city with a long history. Home to Shakespeare’s infamous MacBeth and the stage for the Jacobite uprising and final defeat, Inverness will allow you to connect with the past like nowhere else.
Be sure to take a cruise so that you can take in all the beautiful views and hopefully find Nessie! We booked an exhilarating thrill ride to look for Nessie!
Loch Ness
Inverness is the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands and home to Nessie- the Loch Ness Monster. There are over 1,000 eye witness accounts and lots of unexplained evidence, leaving scientists baffled about whether it is truth or myth. The iconic Loch Ness is one of the largest and deepest expanses of water in the UK. Its steep banks plunge to a depth of over 800 ft, and it’s the largest in a string of lochs along the Great Glen, located just south-west of Inverness.
Urquhart Castle
For fantastic views of Loch Ness and an awesome history lesson, head to Urquhart Castle. Wander around the ancient ruins of this ancient castle that has been there since the 13th century.
Once one of Scotland’s largest castles, Urquhart saw great conflict during its 500 years as a medieval fortress. Blown up in 1692, it now remains as ruins for all to see as a glimpse into the medieval past. You can also take a closer look at Nessie and even the castle by hopping aboard a boat cruise like we did.
